Spherical Geography
Whether it was our own misconceptions or those of the US cable news chatterers this morning, much of the coverage of the Air France tragedy seemed to assume that the plane would be taking a standard North Atlantic route. Elements of the actual information associated with the chatter didn't seem to make much sense, however, and sure enough this France 2 map shows that the plane didn't take such a route. Perhaps to minimize time over water and with less of the northern short-cuts to play with, Africa features heavily in the route.
