Subculture

Larry Wilmore was the guest comedian at last night's White House Correspondents' Association dinner. The theory on his edgy, roast-worthy performance, which got an often frosty reception inside, was that he was playing to the wider audience who would be watching live or later on clips. But a complementary possibility is that his intended audience was his fellow comedians. The spectacle of persevering through jokes for a grumpy audience has a certain cachet for comedians, as is evident in the Kenny Bania-Jerry Seinfeld relationship on the latter's eponymous show. Anyway, Barack Obama had enough good jokes that he didn't suffer from Wilmore having decided to take a dive.
