Pope Francis accepted the Charlemagne Prize this year, and made a pro-European Union speech. Whatever. This preposterous award was given to Ireland's Pat Cox in 2004, but perhaps most bizarrely for the Pope, a previous recipient of the Prize is, in the manner of Private Eye's Bore of the Year Award, the Euro. That's right: in 2002, it was given to the single currency, whose discipline 6 years later would accelerate recession across half of the continent. Special commemorative editions still available on e-bay.
