Wasn't the red flag, so to speak, in the career of
Karl-Heinz Kurras not his shooting of an unarmed demonstrator in 1967, but the fact that as late as 1944 he had volunteered to fight for Nazi Germany? Who, by 1944, and presumably living in the eastern part of what was then Germany, could not have known a lot about the character of the Nazi state?
